Rev related rattle
Discussion
Evening all,
I have a '96 mk1 1.8 which has developed a rattle.
It only happens if you are running steady at >4,000 revs or when you put the clutch down.
It's a tinny rattle, I'm thinking a heat shield or something.
Anyone able to give any pointers? I'm planning on getting it on the stands for the 1st time after work tomorrow.
ETA: Thanks!

I think some of the heat shields which rattle are the one in the engine bay, the one around the cat and there's also one right above the backbox. I don't know what makes these rattle, I've just read that they can.
I have a rattle myself, but it seems to be coming from the rear left brake and I'm having a tough time tracking down the cause.

Pads anti-rattle clips present? Hand brake adjuster screw loose?I have a rattle myself, but it seems to be coming from the rear left brake and I'm having a tough time tracking down the cause.
I have a massive rattle at the moment which I've narrowed down to the downpipe heat shield, it's pretty annoying but doesn't matter much.
If you can, get someone else to hold it at the annoying revs and get under it with a hammer and hold it against various parts until the rattling stops.

Is this in all gears or only in 4th? Does it also do it but to a less extent at 2k?
You didn't answer my question
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th - haven't noticed it in 5th, mainly as I'm not in 5th at those revs much.
It will do it at 2k+ revs it seems to be when the engine in under load - when its making the noise and I press the clutch/ease off the power it will stop...
