Seeing the MX light
Discussion
Well I am one of those guys that has slagged these cars for years as a friend of mine had one for him and one for his wife back in the 90's as new cars, I had a modified Dolomite Sprint (I still do) and regarded his MX5 as slow and saloon like.
Last year I bought my wife a nice shiny red 91 Eunos auto and its absolutely perfect for her and goes surprisingly well.
So I bought an MX5 for me too (97 Mk1)not knowing that it has a poxy 90bhp lump with the intention of turbo or V8 insertion.
Instead I found a project that has an MX5 turbo engine that I am going to finish.
So I have just given my little MX5 its first trip across country to see our daughter and found its handling and feel to be great as it gives the impression that it will corner as fast as you like! In fact I am tempted to track it because I think it is one of those cars that can be thrown at a corner with minimum braking.
I have to admit that my Sprint has never been overtaken by an MX and indeed I have seen many MX 5's spin on track days, after my drive in the slowest available MX I have to ask why, because even a standard 1.8 Mk1 should worry my 170 bhp sprint on track.

Now I know this chassis looks weak but it is amazing how the designer has triangulated it. The guy who I bought it from has had the donar car featured in Performance car and then he used it for this. Also in the huge pile of bits it came with is an ERL water injection kit which looks interesting.
I am not a wealthy man and so the car will not have the Phoenix shell it was designed for but instead I will make it a no screen Lotus 7 type car.
Next spring is my suggested completion date!
