Probably not much. I've heard decent engines can be had cheap, you might get more buying a replacement engine and fitting then either keeping or selling as a working car, assuming you can either fit the engine yourself or get someone to do it.

Ah that sucks! Are you sure you've got HGF?

Not yet because the tts at the garage didn't come and pick my car up like they said they would.

I'm pretty sure it's HGF or worse (warped head, etc).

I really don't want to spend any more money on this car if I can help it.

I guess I'll wait and see what happens

Was all your cooling system filled with mayonnaise when it all got replaced? Shouldn't the garage have spotted this when they replaced it all?!

I' be amazed if its got HGF they are Metal gaskets that can handle loads of boost no problem.

p.s. I have an early 1.6 engine with about 70,000 mile on it sat in my garage near Reading, yours for £50 if you come and take it away. (running perfectly when I pulled it out and put the 1.8 turbo in)

Interesting, might not be HGF, the AA guy seemed pretty convinced it was though, as it was shooting water out of the radiator on turn over, about once turn, which seemed to indicate leaking cylinder.

This was all started by an overheating, which caused steam to come out of every side of my bonnet, I thought the car was on fire.

Coolant being pumped by the pistons does sound serious. I have seen heads that have corroded so that a hole has come through in the combustion chamber. Either this or a warped head/failed gasket can be caused or at least exacerbated by overheating.

Seriously: just get a new engine from a scrappy?

Or fit a V6/V8 wink
