Heat/Sound Insulation..

A little while ago, my cat was blocked.. Causing the transmission tunnel to get warm. So I just cut the cat out and now it doesn't get get hot..

But, would it be worth removing the centre console and carpet and putting down some insulation down there? Or is it pretty pointless?

I've noticed that on lots of the Flyin Miata project cars on their blog, they usually pull the carpet up and fit some kind of insulation all round the interior - I've wondered about asking them what it is.
