Hi all,

My gf recently picked up a tidy UK 97 NA. Problem is the key is about to crack. Mazda want £35 plus £40 to code. Is there a cheaper alternative? Can it be coded using a launch x431 or similar? Also, should the car have central locking - I find it odd it doesn't when it has electric mirrors/windows/AC/ABS etc.

Pic of the key:

Thanks, J.

A 97 Mk1 will have a transponder for the immobiliser in the key so you probably can't use a plain key from a locksmith.

you can use a cut key from a locksmith just make sure the old key is on the same keyring/ close to the ignition barrel when starting the car. failing that see if you can get hold of a blank key with transponder slot and then you can just take the chip out and put it in the new key.

Regarding the remote central locking- my 97 mk1 1.8is didnt have it when i bought it. I got a kit of ebay for about £30 and fit it myself- wasnt too difficult if you know what you are doing with electrics (cut into the hazard light circuit). it was a fun diy project anyway

My spare key looks like a cheapo keycutter/locksmith job. It has a small red block in one side, which I think is the immobiliser chip. Bit like a mini version of the old Ford spare keys.

It starts the car just as well as the Mazda one! Pop into a keycutter, you might be surprised.
