My battery is currently being charged, when I removed it there was one of these:

On the +ve terminal, but it was labelled -ve.. And up until then I presumed that was the -ve terminal although I've not touched the battery. I'm guessing the previous owner put it on; the -ve terminal has the standard connection.

So what effect/benefit would this have of only having a quick release on the +ve terminal, is it not that the -ve should be removed when doing anything on the car?

Also, the Westco battery had a rubber hose connected that went to the floor of the car, there was another but it was disconnected. Are these vents or something?

Yep they are vents, and it is important both should be connected with a T-piece to gthe outlet in the boot.
