Guys I know it has been covered several times before but I need some advice on the raceland coilovers. Since the 5 failed its M.O.T on sills and 1 leaky shock absorber I reckon I might as well take the opportunity to upgrade and loads of people seem to run these and rate them.

My question is who has them on their mkI and are they a straight fit? The only ones I see on ebay are for mkII 98 onwards and dont want to commit to buying them if they wont fit.

TIA guys

Don't think Raceland make coil overs for the Mk.1 anymore.

From what I have read TA Tachnix (sp?) are very, very similar, but some reports say they are not quite as good as the Racelands.

Having said all that I bought Meister R's which are superb...

But if you just want something for right now and don't have the £600 for some MeisterRs they're good value..

yup, i'd love something like the meisters / GGP's on the project car, but as i only paid £750 for it, i'm not gonna spend 80% as much again on suspension.

There is a huge thread on this over on MX5oc - most of the criticism came from people that had not fit them, or even tried them. Most people who fitted them, thought they were excellent value.

Compared to knackered standard shocks, my TA Technix coilovers transformed the car. I would buy them now if I were you, and even if they do fail in 15,000 miles it is still good value!

we fitted a set of Rokkor which are racelands to my son`s mk1 I would say for the price they are very good they work well, dont bottom out easily , they fitted all 4 in 3 hours They are certainly not the best but neither are they crap by any stretch of the imagination.

Exactly.

If mine are useless in a year or so, I'm not that bothered.. I'll have more money then as I won't have such a long list of stuff I need to replace on the car, so I'll replace them with some more expensive units.

Here's my thread about them, with a verdict at the end and some pics

TL;DR: They're worth the money you pay for them. I wouldn't think of them as a permanent solution, but they work as a "stop gap".

A few years back when Skoda were still making reasonable but slightly crap cars they used to do amazingly well in JDPower surveys. The main reason for this wasn't because the cars really were good, just that they were cheap so owners didn't have high expectations. When the cars lasted the 3 years with no major breakdown they considered them to be much better than expected so rated them highly, ignoring the niggles.
Mercedes did very badly though. Owners paid a lot for them and believed their reputation so expected them to be perfect. When they found the door had a bit of a squeak they rated them poorly meaning that according to the JD Power surveys the Skodas would appear to be better than the Mercs.

I see these suspension discussions in much the same way.

Changing a set of springs and dampers isn't exactly a five minute job though. If you buy expensive suspension then you will also have something with considerable value secondhand. That said, I'm sure that anything new will feel far better than original suspension, and these coilovers seem to have created a whole new set of options for people.
