A mate and I are driving to Spain and back next year and we are planning to buy a car just for this. My uncle has an mx5 1.6 and he says its ours for £950. My concern is that we will find it underpowered for such a long trip esp if its the 90bhp model. I've not seen it yet so not sure.

Both myself and my mate have had an mx5 before but they were 1.8s.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Stay off the peage and you'll be fine. Obviously the more power the better, but either way its a road trip for enjoying, not for worrying about mile eating ability.

Just done 3000 miles in 8 days (2 of those days the car was parked) so 6 days driving = 500 miles average per day. 1992 Mk1 1.6 took it in its stride. Not too bad on fuel either, motorway running saw approx 32mpg.

Do it driving

My daughter and other half have just completed 4000k's starting in Spain through France to Italy. Journey back was through Switzerland to France and home. Their car is an early S-Limited it carried the two of them plus camping kit without problem.
I did a trip in my old MK1 across France a few years back although that was a 1.8, although not in the first flush if youth it proved comfortable and very enjoyable

Hi Slash.

I did 4500 miles in my 1.6 driving to Romania.

Not the best motorway vehicle, Reving it's nuts off at 70. Also HOT as buggery even with the roof down. Get ready for a sweaty back on long journeys. All worth it when you get on the backroads though!

Wouldn't have done my trip any different though: http://www.lovepetrol.com/content/232-schos-epic-e...

One thing i might look for is a 6 speed Mk2 next time.
