MX 5 choices.. a little help please
Discussion
Purely out of interest. What would your opinion be?
MK2 MX5 RS - Tein coilovers and pro geo setup, LSD, hardtop, new T1R's, very well looked after and rust proofed since import and the key bit - 48k. The car is a 1998 model but immaculate.
Or
MK2.5 MX SVT sport - no mods but comes with LSD, bilsteins, heated leather seats and obviously a better build. No hardtop though and 84k miles and the car 2003 model.
Both are clean cars and I'm sure I wouldn't do badly with either but I'm keen to know what PH'ers views are.
Cheers chaps!

Mileage is largely irrelevant on MX-5s, buy on condition.
I have the latter (albeit with Gaz Gold Pros in place of the standard Bilsteins) and love it.
The VVT engine is quite a lot more punchy than the figures suggest, much torquier lower down the rev range and hence more flexible. Any chance you can test drive them?

Really don't sweat the mileage. As long as it has a comprehensive service history you are set. Make sure you are happy with the ride on the coilovers, IMHO low/hard MX-5s are actually harder to drive quickly on the road due to them skipping over surfaces. Great on track though, I'm sure.
Hard top - depends really. If you like getting the top down, forget it. If you're not that fussed or want to do motorway work a lot, might be useful.
WHat is worth considering is the rustproofing though.
On balance I think the RS sounds the better car as a weekend toy, but the Mk.2.5 as a fun daily. Would probably have the Mk2.5.

I'm going to pop round and drive the 2.5 now as it's a mile away.. The RS is in Surrey (couple of hours away) and see how I get on.
I don't know why but I like the idea of playing with it and sticking lightweight wheels on and making it a bit more track ready. You never really see the 2.5's played with much.
Which makes me lean towards the mk2 as there's over 1k's worth of suspension on it plus the dinitrol treatment..
Lets see how the test drive goes!

Well I didn't get to see the RS yesterday, I spent so long procrastinating about going that the light went. I could go and see it today. It's a 4 hour train journey away though and then back if I don't like it the same back.. :S
I saw three yesterday. The 03 had rust on the sills. So that was that.
A fairly ordinary looking 2000 model which looked ok but had paint and it wasn't perfect. Also it had no LSD etc so that was it for that one..
And one at an ex Mazda dealer which had patchy history so walked from that.
I just can't decide whether to leave this one in Kent for a couple of weeks until I have more time (risking it selling) or bite the bullet and be prepared for a whole day out to see one car.
