Hi all

Just noticed the other day while cleaning the car (after a milk spill in the boot... mad) that my tyres are in quite a bad state. I think they're from the factory - the stamps on the side suggest they were manufactured in 01(!) so although they've got a bit of tread left, I think it's time to refresh them. So, I'm moving from Bridgestone Turanza E300s to Toyo Proxes T1Rs - £220 for 4, fully fitted from Black Circles.

Pretty pleased with that, and the T1Rs seem to be popular here and with lots of other cars, so fingers crossed I've made the right decision (don't tell me if I havent...)

Cheers all

I had those on my Mk3.5 as my summer tyres, and love them. They're in my shed for the next few months though!

Sounds like you got a good deal.

They're great road tyres, a bit too soft to get the best out of the car on track though. As my car is now going to be track focused I'll be removing a set of nearly new T1Rs and replacing them with some Federal RSRs. Hopefully I can sell them on. Is there any market for part-worns these days?

What characteristics make them too soft? I don't know much about tyres, but I've read a lot of different stuff on the forums. Is it a bit like wine, where an unrefined palate (or foot, in this case!) won't really notice the difference?

The Bridgestones I found were very oversteer-happy, especially in the wet. I don't know if that was their age/tread or just their general character, but I did get a few scares in the wet. That said, it's nice (when it's safe) to give it some beans on a 90-degree turn and kick the tail out a little.

It's the sidewalls, they're very soft compared to the Federals. But that's what makes them good on the road, good grip but with a relatively compliant ride.

perfectly fair tyres for the price - just try to get a few hundred dry miles on them before the roads get too greasy.

Personally I like T1R's for track work. The less tread the better. Drop me a PM when you come to sell!

Yes, I'm told they're good when nearly worn out but I'm too impatient to wait. I'll see about some Federals this week and let you know. They're 195/50/15.

Not bad tyres but not a very competitive price if youre having 195/50/15s. £180 would be more like it. EARS are charging £178 at present, although they were being promoted at £152 a couple of weeks ago, think.

Yokohama Paradas would come in at about 50p cheaper for the car too, for those interested, which seems to be an extremely keen price.

Camskill are asking £2 per tyre more, excluding delivery and fitting, for the same kit (and £37 each delivered for the T1Rs)!

I'm looking to get a couple of T1Rs as well, but I'm not sure on which sizes to get...

The current front tyres (the pair I want to replace) are 185/50(or 55, can't remember)/15, and the rears are 195/50(or 55)/15.

I imagine if I go for 50 profiles it's a bit of a harder ride, but less tyre wall roll, but are there any reasons why one might go for one size over another?

You want 195/50/15 all round, I don't think any MX5 has ever been fitted with different size tyres front & rear from the factory (I believe some JDM specials might have had 215 tyres but I think that was still the same size all round). 185/55/15 and 195/50/15 will have pretty much the same size tyre wall (the middle number isn't a fixed size, it's a ratio based on the width) so comfort will be the same. 195/50/15 is the cheapest size too so that's a bonus.

These tyres are now available. Hardly any wear, just under 7mm of tread, manufactured in week 39 2010. Pics here http://s148.photobucket.com/albums/s39/rovermorris...

I'm in Lincolnshire near Louth. If anyone is interested in them pm me. I'd be happy with around half the cost new, I'd get a bit back and you'd get nearly new tyres.

Plus £10 delivery plus fitting, valve and balance. Call it £200-ish fitted.
