Just a general question about mk1 MX5's as was considering getting one as a summer car/track day car.
I know obviously they rust, but what's the availabilty of inner panels, sills etc for mk1's if I got one that needed a bit of work.

in a word excellent.

google mx5parts, autolink, mx5heaven for starters, you'll find pretty much everything from bodyshells to single plastic trim clips, and a choice of new or used.

It's still easy to avoid rusty cars though. Stick to imports to improve your chances of finding a good example.

Theres also people that seem to do a very reasonable job on repairing them so not worth getting your hands dirty doing it yourself !!

I'm sitting on the fence there - I bought a rust-free import but in reality the rust just hadn't appeared yet so within 12 months my OSR sill was a mess.

With hindsight I wished I'd paid a lot less for a rusty one and spent the difference getting it repaired properly from inside out, the endd result wouldve been a more solid car for similar money.

Those cars that haven't had the sills done I'd only pay good money for if I knew they were solid inside and had been well looked after with drains cleaned regularly and inner-sills waxoyled etc, otherwise you're paying good money on the hope its a good'un.
