Say the following happened.

Something went straight through the rad, probably overheated as the head was then skimmed during repairs, cylinders 2 and 3 now have low compression, takes a while to start but when warmed up it seems OK.

What is the feeling of whats happened/is it repairable without major surgery ?

Could be worn or damaged rings same for the bores, if not could be burnt valve stem seals. Big job most certainly. Could be cheaper to just bin the old engine and buy a good known engine.

It wont be stem seals, these might affect oil consumption but not compression, it could be pistons/rings or valves/seats. It could also be a gasket breach if the cylinders are adjoining one another.

A leakdown test will enable you to determine whether the problem is pistons/rings or valves/seats or head gasket, this will point you in the right direction to fix the problem.
