The downfall of the MX5/Eunos, the most important part to look at when you buy one. I sorted mine last year and quite happy with the results. Whatever you've got MK1-2-2.5 or even MK3, not sure if they suffer any problems. Two pics the same as mine or other places if you wish...

Don't be shy hehe

Mine look the same as above, but with Mazda's designo 'brown & bubbly' special effect paint finish, and the driver's side currently has a drain hole in the side as well as the bottom wink

I too have the Mazda designer rust look in the usual places. I'm think of taking the ol' girl to Gareth in East Sussex for a proper going over later in the year.

He certainly does! Plus I'm only in West Sussex so he's just 'round the corner'.

I daren't touch mine, for fear that the tiny paint bubble will crumble away to reveal there's no longer any metal behind it!

Actually for anyone on MX5Nutz, a member has recently posted a few pics of a diff which would indicate the car has been parked on the seabed for the last 10 years.

don't know how to transfer photos, but search for "rusty diff" and have a look.

ETA:

here's one of the pics:

When I saw that I wondered if it had gone down on the RoRo that sank ten years ago. The are Titanic relics in better condition!

The sills and the pic of the diff is the curse of our salted roads in the winter , when my 17yr eunos was imported ten years ago there wasn't a mark on the underside looked brand new , now it's like fighting a losing battle to keep the rust away .!
Noticed rust and bubbling paint on the boot lid edge the other day .... More woe !!

^^^^ You reckon that's bad? I've got rust on the A pillar! I daren't come to any Sunday Services out of sheer embarrassment.

Before, doesn't look too bad...

Pokey pokey with screwdriver, oops, look what's fallen out..

A bit of junior hacksawing later reveals...

Looks like the inner sill is going to need some cutting out and new metal welding in also, but thankfully it appears that its only rotten as high up as the top of the two holes in the inner, and as far forward as where the rear quarter/sill seam is, so I should get away without having to get the whole of the side of the car and/or arch done too.

Please do! I'm not too far up the road from you in Glasgow so I'm interested in before, after, where you went and how much if you don't mind?

Are they using the repair panels or fabricating their own replacement pieces?

It's primarily my chassis leg that's FUBAR'd, so he's planning on just fabricating some of his own panels up using what he cuts out as a template. The sills aren't too bad, not worth buying a replacement panel as they're still solid towards the rear of the car but the inner sills at the front will still fail an MOT so they're getting cut out and new bits butt-welded in.

I'll post some pics up tomorrow and tuesday, and if a good job is done then I'll PM you the details! thumbup

Well here we go.. the "before" pics. Bare in mind all this rust was there when I bought the car, I knew it would need welded for an MOT before I put the deposit down!

Chassis leg rust. by St_Anger1, on Flickr. This is the main bit needing attention, it's looking at the front end of the car whilst standing under the seats and, well, quite clear where the problem is! Note the sill-rot at the right of the picture.

Chassis leg rust. by St_Anger1, on Flickr. The big crack up the other side of the chassis leg. This one is obviously looking at it from the other side.

N/s inner sill (front) rust. by St_Anger1, on Flickr. See the sill-rot mentioned in the first picture. The drainage holes were all clear when I bought it and I have continued to check them every time I wash it, but time and salty roads have obviously taken their toll.

N/s inner sill (rear) rust. by St_Anger1, on Flickr. This is at the rear end of the inner sill on the same side. Not an MOT failure as it's not breakable with a firm poke from the screwdriver, but sill worth sorting out before it inevitably ends up that way.

My offside rear sill/arch:

Nearside - solid at the moment but will clean it up and fill with rustproofer.

Booked in with Garath in a couple of months to repair the offside.

I'm now the owner of a rust free, fully MOT'd Mx-5. woohoo

= Chassis Leg and Sill BEFORE by St_Anger1, on Flickr.

Chassis leg DURING by St_Anger1, on Flickr. yikes

Chassis leg and sill AFTER by St_Anger1, on Flickr. This was it all tacked in place, I don't know the technical term but he went over it all again with a "smooth weld" after this pic.

Chassis leg and sill AFTER by St_Anger1, on Flickr

Chassis leg and sill SEALED by St_Anger1, on Flickr. We opted for Tetraseal instead of Waxoyl, partly because it dries solid instead of staying wet like waxoyl, and partly because I've got loads of it in the garage if it ever needs topped up. hehe

Rear n/s arch BEFORE by St_Anger1, on Flickr. Some last minute poking about revealed the back arch could do with some work too, so that was done as well. He apparently had a very tough time just trying to find some decent metal at all in the arches.

Rear n/s arch AFTER by St_Anger1, on Flickr. But eventually he managed and it has now been coated in the tertaseal too.

£250 all in for 1.5 days work. Happy to PM details to anyone in the west coast of Scotland looking for some welding done!
