Hi guys,

I'm mike to those who don't know me. Ive recently been looking at at trading the old diesel barge in for an mx5. The models I've been looking at inparticular are the mk1 1.8 and the mk3 2.0i sport tech. Insurance wise I'm looking at around 1300-1700 for the mk3 unsure to the mk1 ATM.

What I want to know is will be satisfies with one? What to look for? Any suggestions? Can they be easily and cheaply tuned to get the most from te engines?

My budget is around 5k to buy, what can this get me for the money and The insurance is around bout 1500 to cover insurance. Currently drive a focus 1.8tdci with custom map an some tweaks, I don't want to buy a mx5 that's slowe than the ford.

Thanks for the replies in advance.

Regards
Mike

MK1's are very easy to tune for more power, but you're looking at a minimum of 1.5k to do it properly.

Pretty much your only option is some for of Forced Induction. No N/A mods will make an appreciable difference.

Also bear in mind that adding these mods can increase your insurance significantly.

Lastly, neither a stock MK1 or MK3 will be as quick in a straight line as a modified modern desiel, but find some bends and it'll be left for dead

I did think as much regarding the straight line speed. I feel the best course of action is going to be for me to actualy go and drive both models and see which I like. Im not sure yet whether or not spee is that important or just looking pritty and just being able to have a bit of grunt to see of the chats in their modified cars or the odd business man thinkin his Beemer is all this and that smile

On-Paper the MX5s are quite slow by modern standards 0-60 etc. I wouldn't worry about that - it's not what the MX-5 is about - it's how they feel which matters.

I have just gone from a 231BHP RX-8 (0-60 6.4 seconds) to a 1.8 MX-5 Mk3 (0-60 just under 10 seconds!) - although there a few things I miss from the RX-8, the sheer performance isn't one of them. The 2.0 you are considering is, of course, a bit faster, and I have also owned a Mk2 1.8 which always felt pretty quick too.

There is a big difference between MK1 and Mk3 MX-5s.... Mainly in price? Also Mk3 is more 'grown up'.... but both are brilliant.

Easiest thing is to test drive them both, see what you think.... always test drive soft top cars with the hood up though, otherwise rattles, knocks and other bad noises can easily be missed.

Cheers...
