MX5 or Mk2 MR-2
Discussion
Feel free to move this if in the wrong place?
The price of fuel has gone up so much that i'm now getting trains to my DJ gigs.
The best thing about this is I can get rid my diesel Audi A2.
I'm saving up for a house and as I don't really need a car i'm limiting myself to a £1500.
It'd be mostly used to popping to the shops or going for fun drives in Northumberland (under the pretence of taking my dog for a walk)
I want something cheap, fun, reliable and convertible (most probably the only time i'll be able to own a convertible)
The only previous fun car i've owned was a MiVEC Mitsubishi FTO although i've been insured on and had use of a BMW Z4, Audi TT, Porsche Cayenne Turbo (bosses cars whilst I was a uni student)
Thanks in advance for any help or replies

Jay,
I test drove the MR2's you're talking about when i got my mx-5 and whilst it is a fun car the stereotypical feather-light steering from toyota just ruined it for me. On the MPG front you'll get better miles on a Mazda as well and plus you get the positive of just being able to throw down the roof. For that money you could pick up a decent Mk2. Great for the summer !!

mk2 MR2 isn't convertible. It comes in T bar, or tin top only.
Test drive a few examples of both, it's a personal thing. Some prefer one over the other. You'll get a bias response in the MX5 forum area of the site.
If you're willing to stretch your budget another £500 or so, I'd say get an MR2 Turbo - Lots of bang for your buck

I test drove an MR2 before buying my 1st MX5. I liked it but it felt too familiar as it felt, looked & sounded like the Toyota Carina I had before it. Same engine, same swiches, similar dash/instruments. The MX5 just felt more bespoke and a lot more fun despite being a fair bit slower.

I have had:
Stock MX5 Mk2.5 high-back heated in custom light grey leather.
Elise S1 blue leather.
Elise S2 black leather.
And now I have Mk3 heated black leather.

Think it might be the custom standard one's. They look great. I have had:

Sorry for the thread hijack by the way

I had a '91 g-limited as a fun car for a while. I liked it, it handled well, and went pretty quick. Could be a little juicy on fuel and insurance was a little more than my 'new' 1.8 mx5. I brought the mx5 last friday as i'd always fancied one. I think they both have their own merits, and offer a lot of fun on a budget. However, the t-top doesn't give that roof down experience of the Mazda - the main reason why i opted for a rev2 mx5. Try them both and see what you think - just make sure you get a manual.
Decibel, I'd be buying this http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9... but without the Kevlar drivers seat for £1300. (You could fit a nice new pair of Sparco Sprint 5's for £300 as I have to my MX5)
If I had room on my drive way it would be mine and I'd swap over some parts from my current MX5 track toy on to it, but don't have the time or space at the moment. I wish I'd bought a MK1 RS to begin with but was not really aware of them when I bought my 1990 UK 1.6.
