Hmmm, mine don't pop up with sidelights on. I wouldn't have thought they were meant to?

I'm new to Mk1 ownership, but it seems that some so and some don't. Mine do - and I won't to be in the mine don't group!

IMO you don't want to be reversing the dim/dip mod. If you do, you will no longer be able to flash your headlights using only the stalk meaning you will need to press the maintinence button to raise the lights, pull the stalk back and then lower them again with the button.

Is that a side effect? Although I tend not to flash people, if I want to let them know I am there I can just turn the lights on.

Think very early ones don't (mine doesn't 1990). Later ones can be adapted nu pulling a relay out I believe.

Well that's fair enough if you wouldn't miss it much. I agree they do look better with the lights down, but I never really use my sidelights so they don't bother me!

Personal preference obviously, just don't get the low-rise lamps. hehe
