Hi all. Mx5 is my track car.
I have perfectly good kumho ecsta spts on the front axle, which are 205/55/15 (so taller than they should be). I have the same size on the other axle but these are budget tyres I need to change.
As any replacements would be 195/50/15, I would like to know if I can just replace the two budget tyres and kill the kumhos on a few more track days before replacing with 195/50/15 tyres also, or do I really need to replace all 4 at once for safety on track? I believe there is no MOT issue as they will be paired. Wheels are 15 x 6jj.
Thanks.

IIRC some car have different sizes front to rear (eg 21" rear, 20" front) so it shouldn't be an issue

Thanks for the reply. I wan not sure if it would cause an issue I the car was not designed to be run in that manner. Then again, I'm not convinced how noticeable it would really be...
Think I will go for it (just change the 2) unless someone strongly advises otherwise...

Does your car have ABS? If so then the front & rear tyres need to be the same size.
Either way, you will be compromising the handling with different sizes. I'd replace all 4 together. Maybe save the old pair for a bit of drifting where handling doesn't really matter as much.

Hi

No abs. I don't have a spare set of rims or the facilities to fit and remove tyres, so I really would have to throw them out.
I should add I have only done 2 track days to this point. But that has been enough to highlight the need for quality tyres all round! At this point I really just need more time on track by with tyres that at least give similar grip levels front to back.
What effect will the taller tyre be causing? More roll and therefore less positive turn in and feel on the limit?

MX5s have very good balance front to rear and close to 50/50 weight balance. Therefore the wheel & tyre size is best if it's the same all round. I'd expect a bit more roll from the bigger tyres but mostly it's better to have similar grip tyres all round on track. The general advice would be to have the best grip tyres on the rear but it would also be to have the bigger wheels/tyres on the rear if you have to have them so really I'd say it's better to just go with a full set of new tyres.
Maybe you could get £20 for the old tyres on ebay...
