Why don't my headlights have a beam pattern?

I fitted a set of twin low-profile headlights to my Mk1 a few weeks ago - and last thursday they failed the MOT due to having no beam pattern. The tester said they were just putting out a blob of light.

The lamps are all E marked, doesn't that mean they should be legal?

Is there anything i can do to make these road legal?

they look like plain spotlights, ie no shaped reflector or biased pattern glass to produce the correct beam pattern. Never seen anything to correct plain lights.

As above. Did you get that kit 2nd hand? Doesn't look like a pair of dip/main beam units, just a pair of main beams.
They might well be E marked but that doesn't make them the correct units. The 10" 200W spotlights I had on a car many years ago were E marked but that doesn't mean I could use them as dipped beam headlights (in fact they weren't even road legal with 200W bulbs).

Have you been getting flashed by people when driving at night?

I'd suggest that you will have to replace the dipped beam units for some with the correct beam pattern.

That's what I feared - yeah I bought them used. The previous owner having apparently replaced the lenses when he bought them...possibly not correctly as it now seems.

I've been looking online and although I can't find the right size yet, I can tell that the problem is the pattern in the glass, everything else being sold as road legal has horizontal lines in the glass as well as vertical. Obvious when you think about it.

I'll take them off for now til I can source the rot lenses.

What size are they? 5"? Should be able to get some from a motor factors like Camberley Autofactors just by asking for some in that size. They might need to see one so they can get the fitting right though.

They're 4" lamps, plenty of 5" & 4.5" available online but not seen any 4's yet.

Because they are plain spotlights, NOT Headlights.

Look for some bike streetfighter lights, seem to be around the 100mm mark and should keep you legal, quick search found these http://www.mandp.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=500...

They look a bit deep, but i'll keep it in mind if the ZXR400 one's don't work out.
