Looking at a imported Mk 2 MX5. Any advice?
Discussion
Mrs JS has decreed some topless fun is in order.
Have found what seems a reasonably priced 1.6 MK2 on sale at a smudge over £2000 locally. It's an imported car registered on an X plate and has 72k on the clock and the dealer selling claims to have a full service history and will MOT it before sale.
I'm assuming it'll have had a replacement MPH speedo when it arrived in the UK and may be older than the 2001 plate suggests. Does anybody know how to establish the actual year of manufacture and if there's anyway of confirming the total mileage?
I'm aware of the corrosion issues - thanks to all PH'ers who contribute to this forum - but apart from the ususal check over of any older car anything else in particular I should be looking at?
It won't be doing many miles each year - maybe 3-4k at most.
Max performance is not really an issue so the OH is happy with a 1.6

Date of build can be decoded from the Vin, don't have the link to hand on phone but think you'll find it on miata.net.
2001 sounds about right anyway so I wouldn't worry.
Speedo should be in mph, odo will likely be still in KM.
For mileage the only thing you can do really is check the MOT history, but again, it's not so important on an MX5 so long at it appears sound when inspected. The only thing is question is the sense in going for an import 1.6. Unless your after an RS, there's less of an argument for buying import over UK car when talking Mk2. And the 1.8 performance is adequate, I rather think a 1.6 Mk2 really might be a bit slow ?
Check it out, see how it drives. The best advice really is that there's stacks of them for sale do don't jump into it, look at a few.
