What I would suggest is a bit of carpet/foam stuck on the garage wall to protect the car door.
I have a tiny garage and this is what I have done. I have carpet attached to the wall and I always put the top down so I can more easily get in & out of the car. I just pull it back up (without latching) while it's parked in there to keep the dust out of the interior. I have also put a mirror on the back wall so I can look down the pax side and get as close to the wall as possible on that side.My garage opening is 2140mm and the MK3/3.5 fits in with the wing mirrors out, probably 10cm space.
At its narrowest point my garage is 2370mm wide and there is plenty of space to get out of the mx5, I just have a 2" thick sponge on the wall to open the door against.
I always reverse in as that means I can get closer to the wall on the passenger side.
