Venture Edition - Should I ?
Discussion
Have almost talked myself into ordering a new Venture Edition. Good deal on it, no VAT so a big saving on list price, but then there are always discounts.
I sold my Trilogy a year ago and bought a 996 (2000) I enjoy the power of it but its not as enjoyable to drive as the MX5.
Undecided on colour though but am leaning toward ebony, a very dark purple which in certain light/angle looks black. Other options are metropolitan grey (there are enough grey cars in the world) or white.
If I sign up today I get two years free servicing, which is not a deal maker but if I am going to do it I might as well save that bit more.
Am I being a bit daft ? Will I miss the 'grunt' of the Porsche ?

I think it depends on where you drive. I've had a 987s, Z4 and a TT as my last three cars and I think compared to them you will notice that the seats and the driving position (depending on how tall you are) are no way as comfortable, the engine note is no where near as nice and you'll miss the pull that a more powerful car will provide.
However having said that I think the MX5 is about as much fun as it's possible to have on a proper twisty road. The car feels so light and nimble that you can have massive confidence in going quickly. I do think it feels like you are going a lot faster than you are, but as your having so much fun, who cares!
Mind if I ask what sort of deal your getting? I've just bought a 2012 plate Sport Black in white, after lots of hunting about it seems that around about £18k should be a target price for a brand new one, if your paying more than that then it may be worth some harder haggling or look at some other dealers.

Realistically these days, isn't it better to have a car that feels like you are going faster than you really are than one that needs serious speed to feel fun? I'm not getting into the debate about which car is best as I've never driven any Porsche or a Mk3 MX5, just talking generally about speed on the roads. In fact the best fun I've had on road & track was in a Westfield XI which had no power, no grip and no brakes but was great fun just trying to keep the speed up and to feather it through the bends! A bit too basic for an every day proposition but I'd love one as a dry weekend car.mathmos said:

£18.5K and around £500 more for my 996 than I was offered against a used Boxter, I am happy with the deal, two years free servicing is a nice little sweetener as well.MX-5 Lazza said:

Yes they're very capable cars, I loved mine, but I found them extremely dull to live with as they were only fun when doing triple figures which you really can't do on our roads..

I think it's a great car and I am really enjoying mine!

By the way, anyone know if the sat nav unit can be installed in a normal sport tech/sport black?
It shouldn't be any more difficult than fitting any other stereo. Taking the Mk3 stereo out is fairly easy. The 2-din facias are available from mx5parts.com for about a fiver.Unfortunately I've not seen the TomTom-based satnav head unit for sale anywhere, otherwise I'd probably get one. Have you seen them for sale?
Go for it!!
I picked up my new Mk3.5 at the start of this month (and have done 2000 miss already)....
It's a (hopefully rather rare) white Sport Tech, absolutely brilliant. Nearly went for a venture edition but this was available at a better price, and prefer the silver wheels!
Just installed a smartTOP today which has improved the roof operation somewhat.

Interesting, the dealer was struggling a bit to get the colour I wanted and when I enquired about the possibility of taking a Sport Tech instead the figure quoted was around £1K more. Anyway he has sourced a Radiant Ebony so it looks like the deal could be on. I picked up my new Mk3.5 at the start of this month (and have done 2000 miss already)....

Hi I picked up my Radiant Ebony Venture Edition coupe today - brilliant - even after a Scirocco 2.0 GT - you won't regret it specially if the weather keeps up! Lovely revvy engine (after the turbo in the VDub) and loads of laughs trying to get the sat nav to understand what you say with the top down...
Love the ebony colour and I do think they look good in white - not chavvy at all. Just so long as the reserve the Velocity red just for the launch edition and my Miyako.
Mine is only a 1.8, but it was great this morning on my 5am drive to work. I was to much of a wuss to put the roof down, but on a long emplty 3 lane dual carriageway it was a great start to the day. I nearly took the CX7 but when I got outside, the little red car just begged for a run out. Its sitting outside now, and I think I may take the long way home later.
The only thing is I have a deep sadness and I know I am going to have to get rid of it. It isn't much use for us these days other than as a commuting car. We have a dog now and tried a trip away with him and the two of us in the MX5. Do-able but not pleaseant for the passenger - me or Mrs wildcat - or the dog. It really needs to live up at our place in Galloway but I can not afford to keep an 11 plate car as a 3rd motor - or a 3rd motor for that matter.
Still, I keep putting off a decision about it. I have had some nice cars over the years, some more expensive than the MX5. I have to say that if I had to choose one car to keep for ever it would by my Miyako. Love the thing.
Enjoy your new car.
