Apologies in advance if this is one of those questions that always gets asked, but I didn't find anything on the latest 8 pages, and the search function is out of action as usual....

Anyway, it's new hood time and I'm just wondering, what are the pros and cons of vinyl vs mohair? Is it just a case of what looks nicer? Does one wear better than the other? Is mohair harder to clean?

Any info much appreciated, my vinyl one has gone all stretchy and now balloons when driven at 60mph+...

Ta! thumbup

Cracking/splitting seems to be an issue with the vinyl ones.

how does mohair stand being folded up for 4 months or so over winter while a hard top is on?

They both have advantages and disadvatages. Advantages of Mohair is that it last longer (does not crock at the folds after time like vinyl can) and looks more luxurious (personal view). Advantages of Vinyl is that is cheaper and easier to keep clean and repair rips/vandalism.

I got a Vinyl roof with a glass window (get glass everytime, always clear, easy to clean, no need to unzip to stop spliting like plastic windows) because bird poo and cat hair are a real pain to get off a mohair roof.

Thanks for the info, might go for the mohair with glass I think. I guess there's a few different comapanies manufacturing these, are there any to avoid or things to look out for?

Go for the Mohair and the glass as a must - if you're paying out to replace a hood, you've gotta be a right tight bd to go for the plastic rear window.

Jack Smith's trimmers in Swansea are highly recommended for all roofs, especially MX5s. Genuinely worth the trip for how cheap he does them.

Hmm, it's 600miles (plus the channel crossing) each way from where I am currently....so maybe not hehe

The hoods I've found online are much cheaper in the UK than Germany, so I'll probably order in the UK and get it shipped over and fitted here. I just want to make sure I get a well made one, not something that looks ok but leaks or fall apart after a while...idea I guess it's worth contacting Jack Smith to see if he can supply the hood on it's own.
