exposed or vunerable when driving your 5 ?
only asking as I am considering a 5 as my next car and my only experience of a 2 seater was an MG Midget , and I did not feel comfortable in it , felt very low and not very 'visible' any comments ?

Sitting next to a 44tonne lorry on a Mway is certainly interesting but apart from that I don't really think about it. I do have quite a loud exhaust which let's everyone else know you're there.

Try driving a westfield LOL I ditched the westie as I was looking up at HGV hub nuts, I am wary of lorries when on dual carrigeways/mways though

I did 60 miles a day motorway commute in my mx5 for a year and tbh i never really felt exposed, and prior to that I drove a massive ford cougar.

In my opinion as long as you drive confidently, are aware of lorries and other traffic and generally just keep an eye out you will be fine.

You sit quite low in an mx5 so you feel very much "in" the car, rather than "On" it, so this helps the psychological feeling of protection.

My Westfield was worse, but much like that car, one of the situations where I find I have to be extra careful is on those roundabouts where you are too low for other cars pulling out to see you as you whip round them pulling a few G's

I tend to treat all other road users as though I am on a motorbike anyway, regardless of what I am in.Seems to work.

I had a Mk2 midget for a few years now own an MX5. One of the main reasons I sold the Midget was the worry what would happen in a accident, your legs are in the crumple zones and the steering colmn is like a lance! Thats of course if the windscreen doesn't remove your head after a roll over.

There where more deaths in the 60's than now even though there was nothing like the amount of traffic.

In answer to your question, the MX5 feels much more solid in comparison, the only thing I would change is adding a roll bar. Doub't you need one really but I have rolled a car at speed and can't help but think if it happens I will die a very painfull death without one.

I can only speak for a Mk 2, but foamectomy on the seat if you're above average height plus a roll bar and you'll be grand. You are noticeably lower than other cars, but the car itself feels solid and I don't feel exposed in it.
