Mechanically it's sound. Engine and gearbox are fine and it fires up every time.

But the MOT expired last week and it needs a new roof, rusty sills sorting, some scratches/dents repairing.

What is my best best to get some cash for it?

eBay it as an MOT failure. Aren't quite a few kit-cars based on these now?

This one for example.

Don't scrap it, get it recycled.

That MEVX5 looks like the Lotus Elise's ugly sister. I like the idea, but the original MX5 looks much better IMHO.

Perhaps the best thing to do it just get it supercharged? Any idea how much it costs?

The dilema is S2000/Chimaera or supercharged MX5!

Now bear with me, as I am not a qualified mechanic, but to the best of my knowledge, screwing a supercharger on will probably not improve the chances of this car passing its MOT.

If he's unwilling to fix the rot, betting is he won't want to shell out on a 'charger?

This, worth alot as a donor than scrap.

Should be an easy 300-400 quid for you.

For what it's worth, my mate got circa £900 back on the unused parts on his donor car for the Exocet. If I remember correctly, he didn't pay much more than that for the car, so essentially a free donor for the kit.

Definitely don't scrap it.

Don't euthanise something as lovely as an MX-5! Scrap value you probably wouldn't get more then £150 for it. You'll make much more by simply selling it spares or repairs on ebay, better yet sell it on an MX-5 forum that will keep it alive.

I would put it up on ebay spares or repair start of t 99p no reserve plenty of people will want them. Or put it up on the mev forums the producer of the exocet and x5 and other kits that would be ideal for a kit car.
Infact im building one from a donor that failed it's mot on welding.

I was in the same situation as you and advertised it on the local MX5OC forum (but I'm sure eBay etc would work as well) as an MOT failure at £300, then went to bed, when I woke up in the morning I had 5 or 6 emails from people saying they'd take it and £300 in my back pocket by lunchtime, without having to strip the car or anything.

I'd love to keep it, but it would require:

1. Sills sorting
2. New roof
3. Dings/dents being fixed
4. New hood (it's on the original 22yr old one!)

I'm based in south London if it's any help to anybody.

I might be interested in it if it has a long nose crank 1.6 engine.

There is nothing wrong with the short-nose crank if that is what it has. You just need to be more careful when doing a cam belt change. I wouldn't put a SC on one but other than that they are fine.

It's a 1990 US import Miata, so not sure about the engine.
