This is on behalf of my son but what sort of difference is there when insuring a UK vs import MX5 ?
He is 19 with a year NCB and are about to start looking for one.

Huge difference. I was 19 when I got mines (am 20 now) and imports were about double the price insurance wise! If you need any more info pop me a PM and I'll be happy to answer!

Great stuff. Gonna go with Admiral Multi car becaus they are a bit cheaper for my boy but alot cheaper for me and my M5 and Arbath so the savings are well worth it.

Mine was exactly 100 quid cheaper for a uk car with the four companies I compares against, I got the best quote from Adrian flux

How long is a piece of string?!!

Some will tell you it's hugely more expensive, mine didn't cost any more at all. I guess it depends on your circumstances and which insurers you approach.

I couldn't really get insurance on a UK MX5. Quotes were around £3-4k at 20 with 0 NCB.

Insured an Import Eunos on an Import Policy through Flux Direct. 20, 0 NCB for £1300.

£900 this year. 21, with 1 Year NCB.

I spent months, literally months shopping around and getting quotes. Eventually it paid off.

I've always shopped around until it didn't make any difference.

Admiral wouldn't have it on our multi-car policy, which was a pisser as it would work out very cheap, so needed a separate policy. Shopped around until I found a sensible insurer that didn't want a premium for a Eunos, which was Swinton.

£1k for an 18yr old on an MX5 seems a bargain compared to what other friends kids pay on shopping cars, who was that with? Any special circumstances/exclusions?

Well we have purchased a nice 1.8 UK car as the insurance worked out at £1400. My boy is very happy to say the least.

Paid £850 fully comp at 19 for my Mk1 1.6 SE, with 1NCB and a fault accident.
Paid £750 this year at 20 with an additional years NCB, but a TS10 on for a moment of utter madness. If that TS10 wasn't there I would be under £500 frown

I'm 19 with Admiral on a Multicar Policy. Cheap as chips in relation to others. Just put my MK2 up for sale but Admiral have been fantastic. They have some funny clauses which I wasn't best pleased with but it seems many have adopted these now and I've just accepted them.
