Hi, I was looking at buying a cheapish MX5 for the summer - an H Reg Mk1 1.6 in red to be exact but before committing decided to get a quick insurance quote. Shocked is not the word!

I'm 36, no claims or accidents in the last 5 years, live in a low crime area but have no garage so the car would be on the street overnight. It would be our 3rd car as a family. I got quotes for SDCP with commuting all for around £400 (moneysupermarket & Adrian Flux)I put in a mileage limit of around 7000 which on reflection is probably high.

Having read various posts on here I'd expected the insurance to be more like £200 (or less)

Am I missing something? Are there any special MX5 insurers out there that you all use? Does limiting the mileage significantly reduce the cost?

If this is a regularly asked question please feel free to direct me to a relevant thread.
Ta!

I'm 44 and my 01 1.8 MX5 is very modified (supercharged, exhaust, roll hoops, suspension, wheels, seats, ecu etc.) and my insurance last month cost me £401. That's with Footman James though AON on the OC club scheme. They actually quoted £444 originally but I got a quote of £401 from Flux which they were happy to match so I stayed with the devil I know.
I'm sure you must be able to get it a lot cheaper out there somewhere.

Try Sky, Aplan and REIS. There's a sticky with a list of numbers on MX5Nutz somewhere.

Mx5 can be covered under classic car policy with no NCD. Try Hertitage insurance online for Quote.
