Hi guys

Can any one offer any advice? wife's mk 3 as developed a metallic grinding noise from the front of the engine.

sounds more to the right then left so don't think it alternator,there is slight play in the tensioner pulley i can wiggle it slightly is this normal?

could it be water pump? but it has not been overheating and has not lost any coolant.

can any one recommend a good mechanic in the Northampton area

Can't help you with the diagnosis, but these guys are based around Silverstone, so hopefully not too far from you. I should warn you that you may end up spending more than you planned though.

Just a quick update incase anyone gets the same problem .
Turns out it was the compressor for the aircon, pulley has seized solid £500 smackers for a new one(OUCH)

is it possible to get a smaller belt and just disconnect the aircon all together ?
