mazda mx 5 - what aftermarket rear fog light

Hi, I`ve just purchased my first MX 5 and it has a huge and ugly rear fog light, obviously cheaply added on by previous owner to obtain MOT - I would like to know from other owners what they have done to improve the look of this legally required light, which was not originally fitted to the imports.

My mk1 has the optional spoiler on it, and the brake light in that has been converted to be the rear fog light. No issues with MOT in 11 years either.

Obviously not an option if you don't have a spoiler, though.

The 5 I'm breaking soon has the built in to bootlid brake light which I have wired in to the fog light wiring.

Works perfectly.

Sounds fantastic - but do I understand you correctly - do you take out the brake light and fit in another, SPECIAL fog light in its place, or do you just wire up the fog light wiring to the old brake light?
Please assist me to understand what you actually did.

I have the offside reverse light (with a red bulb) wired up to a fog light switch. Passed MOT no problem.

As above, I've wired mine up to be both a brake light and a fog light.

But surely doing this when you're driving along in fog with your head lights and fog light on it will look like your brake lights are on

Only that centre brake light will be on. The brake lights in the clusters won't be affected.

Just do this - wire in the fog light wiring into the reverse light and get a red bulb - problem sorted

Yes but you will have head lights on as well if you need to have your fog light on, and whilst I accept they are not as bright as brake lights they are in the same position. I bet the majority of drivers will think it looks like the car has it's brake lights on.

Unfortunately the majority of drivers aren't that observant.
Everyone expects brake lights in the light clusters. The centre brake light is just an extra.
It's all a bit academic. In 28 years of driving, I think I've only used fog lights a handful of times and only twice in 14 years that I can remember in MX5s. They are mostly more of a legal requirement than a real practical requirement.
