Cheap mk1 roof required
Discussion
I bought the Dandycars vinyl roof from their ebay shop, comes with a fitting DVD, around £160 all in from memory.
Fitted it myself with basic tools, does the job & looks better than the old cracked vinyl roof that was on it.
Doing it yourself also gives you an opportunity to properly flush through drain holes, clean parcel shelf carpet, repair damage to the rain rail etc so well worth attempting.

If, as you say, the car's not gonna live forever and you want to keep the cost down, why not get a complete hood and frame assembly from a breakers or owners' club / nutz classified. A lot easier to do than fitting a new hood.
