Ok, so snow on the road 40 miles B and C roads starting at 6 am, never drove the mazda in snow yet! So the choice is the 5 low ground clearance , Rwd, abs no traction control, it's a 1.8 mark 2 and a bit!
Or my Vauxhall omega 2.6 automatic Rwd but with abs traction control and a snow button on the auto box so you start in a higher gear, but its still not good in snow on hills,
Views please?
No the other one does not like snow either!

I would look it at which one would you be more annoyed about if you slide into something?
I had no choice a few years back and was out in my MX5 when it decided to drop 6 inches on the A3 in an evening. Most tense journey of my life and took me 3 hours to do 15 miles to the point articulated lorrys had more grip are were overtaking me.

If you take the MX, fill the boot up with lots of heavy things.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I will be using my Mk 1 tomorrow. I just hope very little snow falls as they are shocking in that kind of weather. Trouble is my ZT has a cracked cooling pipe T-Piece which Im not going to get round to fixing till the weekend & the other choice is the MGF, which is equally bad as the MX5!

Good Luck driving

Nice choice of words laugh

My MX5 is now a 2nd car but MX5s were my only cars for nearly 10 years and I used to drive them in all weathers including heading into a blizzard in Kent a few years back when the messages on the radio were to avoid the Kent area. It was great! The roads were empty and even with Goodyear F1 GSD3 which are worse in snow than T1R I had no real problems. LSD does help a fair bit.

p.s. I wouldn't go with the "add weight in the boot" theory. It might help with a bit of traction to get you moving but if you start sliding then the back will overtake the front very quickly as the weight balance will be ruined. Just make sure the tyres with the most grip are on the rear.

Bung some stuff in the boot, sellotape some pillows to your bumpers if you're worried about crashing and revel in the driftage. You'll love it!

Just took me 45 minutes to do 3 miles home from work and despite the average of 4mph I was drifting around every corner. Brilliant rally driving fun at a walking pace smile

I am slightly concerned about the clearance and also never really knowing if you are going to re-gain the grip. Also, once you are off the cleared road you could get stuck very very easily.

Very serious. Fine for slow town driving which is the route of my commute. The usual 30mph isn't getting much above 10mph. Lots of people are managing without winters so we are in considerably better position. Getting off the line is no issue with correct winter boots on. One must be careful when stopping though!

Personally I'd rather not mix summer and winter tyres, but each to their own.

Personally I would rather have four winter tyres too but I find the current set up is a reasonable compromise and better than having none (by a long way!)

Drop some pressure from the tyres and don't drive like a plonker and you should be fine.

Just so you know, the first line of the first reply, made my mind up, so I took the vauxhall omega, it had new rear tyres a couple of months ago, and has only done about 100 miles since. That's because I like the 5 smile anyway the vauxhall was as expected! Took 3 times longer than normal and when I got home it took 30 minutes and a shovel and 10kg of PDV salt to get the vauxhall up the small hill on my drive laugh any small fwd would have got up there no trouble, still had to fire up the blue one to make me feel better, so only thing is, what do I take tomorrow?
I am sure winter tyres would help but that seems overkill for the number of snow days we get, anyone tried those snow sock things?
