I've got a 1992 1.6 Eunos, it's old and pretty rusty and just my cheap toy, does very little milleage, just the odd blat around now and then, and from that point of view I'd really like to mod it a little bit to make it even more entertaining. Not really interested in more power etc.., just more noises.

Firstly, it has a K&N type cone filter on it in place of the usual plastic trunking. I've made an extra heatshield box around the filter and cut a small vent into the headlight cover, but I wonder if I could get more induction noise (and perhaps cooler air to the inlet) if I somehow ducted the airflow right into the area by the filter - anyone done anything like this?

Second, it has an MX5Parts twin pipe on it so it's pretty loud, and occasionally i get a little pop from the exhaust when lifting off which for some reason I find very entertaining, and ideally I'd like more of that - I know it's a bit chavvy etc.. etc.. but is there any easy way to make it pop and bang more often?

thanks

For exhaust noise - Decat.

Also, advancing the igntion timing a it 'enthusiastically' results in increased fuel getting into the exhaust on overrun - aka pops and bangs.

But only do this if you know what your doing, with a proper timing light, a healthy engine, and a godo understanding of what will happen if you push it too far (dead engine).

My old Mk1 with HKS manifold, Decat and MX5parts exhaust would pop flame on gear shifts once hot.

Well it does have a decat pipe at the moment - I did try an unsilenced decat pipe to start with but it was unpleasantly loud, so I swapped to a silenced decat. IIRC I also installed a high flow downpipe when I got the car 5 or 6 years ago, but it has the standard exhaust manifold.

I don't actually want more exhaust noise, it's loud enough as it is, I just want more variety of interesting noises, such as pops and bangs from the exhaust and more induction noise.

I have a proper timing light and I've set the timing on my engine quite a few times, usually after I've rebuilt it again. Currently it's set to about 14 degrees as per the usual timing mod for these engines.

What would I need to set it to to get more popping and banging?

i thought it was less timing (retarding) that popped on the overrun as the combustion event starts later in the cycle therefore more unburnt fuel makes it through into the exhaust.
