De cat exhaust system
Discussion
Hi all,
im looking for a de cat exhaust for my Mk1 Eunos 1.6 and am getting conflicting stories on when it is or isnt legal, could anyone please clarify?
Car was first registered 01-08-92 and according to the V5 registered in the UK 01-08-2004.
MoT is due the end of march so i could wait till then and change it afterwards??
Just out of interest, is there significant benefit of a de-cat apart from the snarl?
cheers

I'm no MOT tester but i think CATs became mandatory in 93/94 so you should be legal to remove it on that basis - BUT, you'll still have to pass the emissions test, which it probably wont without the CAT.
In terms of effect, you get a nicer sound (IMO, it's very subjective) and a warm fuzzy feeling from knowing that in theory you've made your car more powerful. However, you wont notice that extra 1-2hp at all. Ever.

The cat test came in around 95-96 so anything before that is tested on a less stricter non cat test. All the mx5 were fitted with cats due to different rules in japan but they were never needed in the uk till 95-96.
You will be fine to remove the cat and it will pass the emission test aslong as the engine is running fine but before the test put a bottle of petrol additive and give it a good thrashing to get the engine nice and hot for the emisions test and make sure the mot tester tests it as a non cat test.

My mate, who runs a garage, says that cats were only necessary post '93. Seems a bit of a grey area though.
As for performance benefits you really need a different manifold as the stock one I'm sure is designed to work with the cat. I felt that the car lost a bit of bottom end torque but its now a bit perkier higher up the rev range and revs nice and freely. You get more backfire too

Pre-94 imports can be tested at the lower standard if there is no record of your VIN in their database (as an import, there won't be). So no cat required.im looking for a de cat exhaust for my Mk1 Eunos 1.6 and am getting conflicting stories on when it is or isnt legal, could anyone please clarify?
Not all MOT testers know this. I had to show the rules to my local guy.

I believe it also has to be registered as a Eunos Roadster too. If the reg documents say Mazda MX5 it will get tested as a UK Mazda MX5.
I understand that it's possible (although not easy) to get the name of the model changed on the V5 by contacting the DVLA if you can prove it's currently incorrect. Now if you make a cold air intake breathing from the area behind the windscreen wipers you will get an incredible induction and exhaust noise.

Rather than use a pipe I made a sealed metal box that fits around the K&N cone filter (with an end plate between the filter and the inlet flap box thingy) and that leads up to and is bolted to the bulkhead where the washer bottle used to be. I cut a rectangular hole in the bulkhead at the mouth of the metal box, wrapped the box in heat-reflective material and moved the washer bottle to a 45 degree angle leaning against the suspension turret.
Doesn't make any more power, but above 3000rpm the noise is fantastic, a bit more Impreza-like with throbs rather than a flat sound.
