water pump inlet pipe - mk 2.5

Hi guys, have read many threads on these and i think I have the later type fitted to my car - but they are quite scarce to get a hold of - so can you just fit the early type and either work out some way of reducing the pipe diameter from the stat housing? or can you fit n earlier stat housing to also get around the problem?
