Hey folks,

I'm interested in getting a 1.6 MK1 auto (so both me and my gf can use it), but just wondered whether you guys have had any experiences of them? Good to drive? How are the autoboxes?

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks! Matt.

yes

I recently bought one, a couple of weeks ago and it's great fun. The auto box is quite punchy and has a good kickdown. If you learn to manipulate the 1 and 2 gears you can easily get some good sideways fun out of it.

We had one a while back, bought an auto cause my girlfriend only drives autos, and she didn't drive our mx5 once.
So check your other half will actually drive it!

Anyway, I agree with everything mikeyplum has said.
The kickdown is really good and I had a lot of fun with mine.
I really just enjoyed pootling along through country lanes and with the auto it was really lovely and relaxing.
But the odd early morning blast was still a lot of fun, no doubt a manual will be even more so but the autobox i never felt was crap, i always thought it was pretty good.

That's great, thanks guys smile!

How do you find fuel usage is with the auto? What sort of miles do you get from a tank?

Thanks again! Matt.

When I picked mine up from Manchester and drove it back to the Valleys, South Wales I done 350km's on £45 worth of services petrol (£1.55/l). By my calculations, thats 211 miles at 33mpg. Which I was pleased with baring in mind that it had the bare minimum of oil, a clogged to fk air filter and was in desperate need of a service!

I get about 150km's (93 miles) to about £20 worth of petrol @ £1.36/l = 29mpg. That's if I drive it like a saint on my daily commute, which consists of a lot of B roads and stop start driving. Otherwise, will only see 100km's, so about 22mpg

That's not to bad I guess, but not as good as I hoped! It's a 45 litre tank I think? So probably around £55 to fill up. Do you know how many miles you've had out of a full tank?

Thanks for the advice so far!! Matt.

I only get 25mpg out of my manual one but then I do drive it everywhere with my foot buried in the carpet.

To be honest, I haven't yet filled the tank and run it dry. I normally, whenever I get a new petrol car, put a jerry can of petrol in the boot. Fill it from empty and run it till it runs out, so I know how much it can do to a tank.

I'll let you know when I get round to it...

Nick + Mikeyplum, thanks very much! I think the 1.6 Auto is the one I'll be going for... you guys and a few more, have given good feedback on the autobox, so that's good enough for me.

Cheers guys!

currently got a 1.6 auto as a loan car.

Its entertaining, but I wouldnt want one every day.

gear change is a bit jerky in the one i have, although I'm not sure if they are all like this?

As the other have said you can get the back end out if you learn to use the gears but its not that entertaining.

Compared to my manual 1.8 it drinks petrol. Im not sure of the MPG but its rubbish in comparison.

Thanks for your feedback^^!

It seems peoples opinions really vary when it comes to the auto boxes in the MK1. Seems they aren't the best for fuel economy in comparison to the manual, but as long as it's better than my very consistent 21mpg Celica ST205 then I'd be happy! I can make do with a slightly jerky gear change too.

Like you and a few others have said they are fun, so I'm willing to give it a shot considering they can be had for a relatively cheap price.

Any more views on these would be welcome too smile

Thanks guys!

The gear change on mine is relatively jerky, however I'm hoping a fluid change this weekend will improve that.

You can see a tale of my auto here:

And, when up to scratch, I'm toying with the idea of selling it to get a 1.8 manual wink

So PM me if you are interested.
