Road tax

My neighbour has offered me his 1996 MX5 cheap which needs some work doing on it. I just checked on Parkers for the road tax and was gobsmacked to learn that it's the same as my 350Z. How is this possible?

That 96 Mk1 engine is based on a 1980s design. The 350Z is a modern engine. It's down to emissions these days and MX5 engines have relatively high emissions.
How cheap?

Won't be down to emissions on a '96 MX-5 though, they are on the old system of above and below 1549cc

True. However, 350Z is a newer car that is based on emissions. You have to take into account that the government don't want us driving old cars so they are taxed higher - unless it's a very old car in which case the tax is free... Makes perfect sense

ETA: I've just read again. Insurance £547!!! Where did you get that quote??? Unless you are young with little ncb you should be able to get it for less than half of that! (mine is around £400 very modified with 245bhp!)

T'was Sky insurance. I'm 68 with maximum no claims but can only be applied to one car (which is ridiculous) - hence £547.

6 months has gone up £30. How the heck can they justify a 20% price hike? Not happy.

I had some issue having a few cars and starting all over with insurance and couldnt claim ncb. Try greenlight insurance really helpful and got me down £244 in the deathly SL post code as well

As mentioned above, a classic policy may be what you need. Its what mine was on last year (before i meade it my sole car earlier this year).

Yup classic policy. Mine is a 1.6 v spec, my ncb is used on my cooper s and I pay a shade over £200 per year for 6k miles policy. I didn't worry about an agreed valuation which would have added £40 on.
