Hi all

A close friend of my wife's has happened on some unfortunate luck as his MK2 has just decided to expire its engine.

He is a hard working staff nurse struggling by so I said I would help him work out the best thing to do with it then help him sell it on. He has already replaced the car with a loan from the bank.

So, I don't know much about it, except its a 2001 car, bit scruffy but essentially sound. Not sure if the rust has got to it badly but I remember him having sills welded last year.

So, what to do with it? Is it worth trying to finance a replacement engine and then sell it? Sell it to the scrap man? Or try and sell it as is?

What's. a non runner worth in the current climate?

Cheers

Where is it? I'd like a project but not a mk2 if I'm honest. (Prefer pop up lights for some weird reason. (oH they look more retro like a 60's elan, 70's TR7 or 80's TVR)

I'd ask your question at mx5nutz too.

In my opinion and it is only opinion, there are plenty of MK1 breakers, and a few mk2 breakers, which means that a decent 1.8 engine can be had, cheap enough but lets face it, he probably hasn't got the time and the skill to swap it over.

What usually happens if the spec is decent, is that people break them up themselves, and spend months flogging bits of trim, and calipers, and rear diffs, until eventually they die a slow and tortured death.

Lets assume its worth £1200 fixed, an engine is going to cost £300 to £400 plus a days labour (£400) so it's worth about £250 to £400 as it stands. If he weighs it it he'll get £150 max, if he takes the trouble to flog every last part it might get him £600 (or not)

If it were me, (and I go back to the point that I'd like a project) I'd get an engine, and spend a couple of weekends fitting it, before a) flogging it, or b) going to a few track days and thrashing it

It all depends on how buggered it is?

Dodgy coil pack = easy fix, sell for loads of dosh

Snapped crank, holed block etc = Scare off 95% of interested buyers, scrap value.

Almost any Mx5 is worth quite a bit in parts these days if you/ your friend have room/ inclination to break it?

Cheers for the thoughts chaps. Car is located in Leicester.

I don't know a lot about the car at all. I know it died during a journey and the AA diagnosed 'big end' failure. However, given its the AA, is could be a faulty plug!

I think I will get him to do some photos and get it up on a few forums as spares/ repair at £250 I think.

Strip it and sell it for parts on mx5nutz. You'll see more than the £250 back. If the roof is in good nick you'llt £100 for it. If it has leather seats they'll see £150 - £200. Gearbox is another £50.

Or you could buy a replacement lump off mx5nutz for £150, swap it out and sell the car for £800 to £2000 depending on spec and condition.

MX5 engines don't break....unless its done astronomical mileages or has ben run with no oil!

Would be wary of the AA's diagnosis....

I sort of agree with you. As for the above, it's only done 82k miles. Given its owners non interest in cars, it's entirely possible it's been ram without oil.

It was sounding awful for a while, he decided to replace the car and drove it till it died, it now won't start and was towed home

2001 - so is it a Mk2 or a Mk2.5 and is it a 1.6 or 1.8?

If the shell is rust-free then it would be a real shame to break it up, as it might make a good base for someone. As was mentioned, there are plenty of cheap engines available.

As Lazza says, what spec is it? That makes a big difference to value and desirability.

Also, where is the car located? Might be worth talking to the nearest good specialist, and getting a quote from them. If your friend can get the car fixed for 5-600quid then he might chose to sell the other car and get back in the MX-5.
