I've had 10 years trouble free & cheap to run little Mazda & sadly the repair cost of a new radiator & water pump will far out weigh the value of the car, It will be so sad to see her go. Buying a new Focus or Fiesta on saturday. Will really miss the little thing .

Balls to the value, get it fixed! Get refurbed or second hand replacements and fit yourself, how hard can it be?

They lied to you. Its a fairly simple job and can be done DIY if you have the tools. DIY half a day or for a specialist a couple of hours. Don't ask a main stealer.

Gotta agree, someone's having you on. Compared to most cars its an absolute doddle. Probably a mornings work for a good MX5 specialist.

Where are you based? We might be able to recommend someone. It would be criminal to scrap a car based on it needing a bit of a repair like that!

My thoughts exactly. I am crap at spannering but even I managed to do the radiator and they are cheap enough. I chicklened out of the water pump as they are cam belt driven, but with a manual and lots of tea probably not too bad - non interference engine so the worst that can happen is the engine won't fire.

Mark will see you right for not too much money!

Seriously, it's a piece of piss. Have you had a cam belt change done? It's basically the same effort and relatively easy access. The two are often done at the same time just because you might as well do the pump while you've got the belt off. None of your engine out rubbish with the MX5.

Ask on http://www.mx5nutz.com/. I'm sure someone will help you out. £110 parts for the timing belt and water pump (if timing belt doesn't need doing more like £40). Radiator will be < £100 too and if you're doing the water pump then it makes the job easier if you remove it anyway.

Don't get a fiesta to replace it, you'll regret it!

Thanks for the replies, the water pump needs changing because the engine overheats & it cant get hot enough for some reading on the mot thingy, i have had the cam belt service done at 55,000 miles & the car is now on 72,000 miles, there is some rust on the underside but it's failed the MOT basically for the water pump issue, not sure if i really want all the expense of throwing money at a car that is 13 years old, the dealer has offered me £500.00 for the car without the hard top , i'm from the wimbledon area & if someone would like to do the work i would rather sped 3 or 4 hundred pounds getting another year or so out of it, seems a shame really because the car is running fine

Failing the MoT because they can't do emissions tests sounds reasonable. It will either be warming up or overheating. Is it really that bad though? Do you drive it there without it overheating?

Have they confirmed that the water-pump really is at fault? Blocked radiators are very common on these cars and cause very quick overheating. My money would be on it just being a blocked radiator which can cost less than £100 and would take about an hour. If it's still a problem then the pump might also be failing.

13 years old is young for an MX5 and 72k miles is barely run-in wink

You are being lied to. I changed the cam belt and water pump on my 1.8Mk2 in less than 90 minutes including a pot of tea. Pump was £22.32. Radiator (new) on ebay now for £34.50 and cam belt kit if you should choose to change it at the same time is £41.95 including the idlers and tensioner.

Even for a very slow mechanic there is change out of 2.5 hours to do the full job so £150 in labour is very generous.

They are pulling a fast one and rubbing their hands at the fact that they will rinse you of your P&J for a measly £500, spend £5 on a thermostat (which is what I think the problem is - stuck closed causing engine to get too hot) and make £££'s of profit!

DOT NOT SELL IT TO THEM - THEY ARE TAKING THE PISS!

Get on the blower and get someone decent to look at it!

One more voice to the chorus. Offering £500 for Mk2 with 72k miles is a piss-take, even considering the work that might need doing.

Don't get rid of it, you'll massively regret it.

Also make sure it isn't just the radiator cap not holding pressure. Replace that first.

Is the cooling fan kicking in? Also check the thermostat.

Agreed on this one they are having you on. Drop me a private message mate, I have a workshop space down in West Sussex and would be able to do that job for very little money for you. Your car in complete working order is worth closer to £2,000 (more if you hold out for the right buyer) so don't let it go for £500.

According to messieurs Garlick and Trent I'm the 'in house MX5 fixer' here at Haymarket towers so I assure you that you are in safe hands.

Drop me a private message - more than happy to help.

Cheers

James
