On the way back from a drift day yesterday, my mx5 started to whine. A sound similar to a supercharger, in that it gets higher pitched the further up the revs you go.

- It's happening in all gears, loudest being 5th at 70mph.
- It only happens when you accelerate. Coasting / slowing down gives no sound.
- The diff is welded, and the gearbox/clutch were replaced about a month ago with no issues since. Gearbox was second hand.
- Aside from the noise, the car seems to run fine.

Just wondering if anyone has an idea what might be wrong?

In order of popping in to my head..

Diff/ gearbox
Over tightened belt
bearings (wheel/ crank/ cam)
breaks binding (unlikely I know, but hey)

Mine whines a little and its not got any worse and doesn't seem to have any affect on the car as a whole. If it's only just started after a drift day I'd be looking at diff/ suspension bits?

Can only be the diff. Poor thing.

Does the pitch of the wine change with road speed or with engine speed?

Mine whines all the time under acceleration, mainly coming from the passenger seatlaugh

Does sound like the diff in this case

Not so sure as OP says:

Which reads to me like it's engine speed related and not road speed related. If it was the dif, drive-shaft, wheel bearing then it would be road speed related. Engine speed related would be gearbox, clutch, engine.

does it whine when revving stationary? If not you can eliminate the engine.
