Hi all. Just bought a 1600 eunos~ mainly from the comments on P/H~ and was looking for engine tuning options.
As I understand it, this is a difficult engine to gain any meaningful bhp without forced induction,so after doing the '14 degree ignition timing mod' was thinking about cat replacement, for a straight pipe. It's a 1991 car so no problems with mot.

Anybody done this, and did you loose or gain anything?

You will mostly gain noise though it should feel a little livelier. Nothing that will show up on a dyno though.

I wouldn't touch the cats.... As previously said, your only going to experience a gain on the "butt dyno" and nothing real.
The engines in these cars are small and reliable, not big and powerful. There is a reason there have been few changes from the introduction of the BP6 to the end of the BP8, its reliable the way it is.
The car was built to be fun, they handle great, and give the driver a lot of control and feel of the road that other cars don't. If you want a fast car, other cars will suit you better. Or if you really wanted to get crazy, you could do an engine swap.

I didn't say I wouldn't fit a cat bypass pipe myself. It's worth it for the noise. I would just do it knowing there wouldn't really be any performance benefit.
And there are much easier ways to get real power without an engine swap wink

done mine along with an exhaust from MX5parts, no benefit in performance whatsoever but big smiles through narrow streets and tunnelslaugh

I'm not naive enough to think a decat will turn it into a ferrarri beater. Knowing that fancy air filters make little or no difference to performance, and a sports type exhaust is great for the first 50 miles of your journey then gets wearing, thought I'd try tuning from a different angle.

As long as there is no power LOSS will probably try this mod. £53 from mx5 parts gets you a replacement pipe.

Easy to fit too, just use plenty of heat when removing the old nuts so they don't snap curse

So are the cats on the mx5 super free flowing unlike the standard cats used on other cars? Or is there really no difference to be had from a sports cat over a standard one?
