last week, the button on the handbrake would not engage automatically on pulling up the handbrake lever

today, the handbrake button will not spring out as far as it normally does, and the handbrake itself is intermittently difficult to disengage

it is still possible to disengage the handbrake by pushing the lever slightly to the passenger's side, but the button still does not spring out as far as it previously did

I have stripped down the plastic covering , and lubricated everything that I can see with WD40 , but to no avail

help please

A similar thing happened to my old Mk1. The button is on the end of a rod, the other end attaches to something. I can't remember the details but I do remember that it became obvious when I had a good look at it.

p.s. WD40 does not lubricate, quite the opposite. In fact it will remove any grease that is in there and then dry out.

mx5 lazza, I was hoping that you would respond to this post

any idea as to how to get the button off?
can you remember what you did to the aforementioned rod?
is there a spring that needs replacement/ lubrication?
what would you use to lubricate?

The button just screws off. I really can't remember what was in there. Possibly a plastic "latch" of some variety that it should attach to that unlinks from the ratchet.
