Coupe or soft top
Discussion
Hi
I'm new to the forum so apologies if this has been asked before as I haven't time to search.
I am going to sell my MGF and hopefully buy an MX5, I didn't have any strong feelings re coupe v soft top until someone said there would be less condensation with a coupe than the soft top. As I hope to use it as an all year round car (MGF was summer only) what are people's experiences.
Thanks in advance
Jx

Having owned a mk1, mk2.5 and mk3 soft tops I now own a Mk3.5 Sport Tech RC. It's brilliant - have a SmartTop module so the roof goes up and down with one push of the button (rather than having to hold the button with the handbrake on).
I don't think I'd prefer the Soft Top over it, though the RC doesn't look quite as wonderful from behind. I think it's a bit quieter at speed and it doesn't have the potential to leak as easily.
It's your choice I suppose? There is a cost differential involved but generally the RC is better specced than the Soft top equivalent.

Condensation is a product of moisture in the car, so if you ever get caught driving in the rain with the roof down and the carpets get wet, it won't matter what roof you have. As you are looking at Mk3/3.5 I don't think the soft tops are old enough to be leaky at all, so at the end of the day it's up to you which you buy.
I had a Coupe which was great, I bought it for the security, perceived sound insulation (in reality the difference is very small) and also because I thought it made the car a little bit more 'grown up'. Others prefer the simplicity of the soft top.

I tested both, but went for the softtop, I think it looks better and having been caught in a rain shower with the roof down in a Boxster, the 12s it takes for the electric roof to raise is the longest 12s of your life when it is raining heavily. The softtop only takes a few seconds.
To me, noise doesn't matter, because when I'm driving the roof is down.
