5th ?

Having a lot of trouble getting my UK spec 1.8 1996 into 5th Gear.

is this a simple fix or a case of dead car? based near heathrow anybody recommend some to fix or replace g/box?

Clutch master or slave cylinders are a common problem and a relatively easy job. Worth trying first before anything as drastic as a new gearbox.

Usually slave cylinder, which is good as it's cheap and easy to replace.

Very easy to DIY too if you have a few spanners

If you cant get into 5th but the rest if fine then its unlikely to be a slave or master cylinder problem but they are cheaper to go for first then the gearbox.

It could well be a worn selector ring/gear in the box. But you can pick up a box for less than £50 quid and a garage will charge around £100-150 to replace, also if your going down that route have the clutch inspected or replaced.

Apart from bleeding the clutch can be an absolute nightmare due to the pigtail line. Often is the case that the Master fails at the same time.
