Any of you guys suggest what might be the problem.... I have a 1995 MK1 1.8 that has a clunk when I apply the brakes... Its not loud or heavy, but its a definite clunk on the first application of the brakes.

So if I am coming up to say a junction, gently apply the brakes, I hear a clunk... if I loose the brakes for a few seconds and re-apply, it clunks again... If I brake gently, it clunks, but if I continue to press harder it does not.

It did it when I bought the car, so I replaced all the pad clips (all six of them in the kit) and the clunk went away... for say 20 mile... then it came back.

So I replaced the pads (although I could see nothing wrong with the old ones) and it went away... for about 20 mile!

I took the callipers off again yesterday... but I just cant see anything wrong... And the clunk went away for about 20 mile!

any suggestions?

My '95 1.8 did exactly the same thing! Never got to the bottom of it. Think somebody told me it was due to the pads moving around but not to worry!

Try fitting new slider pins on your calipers, cured this problem for me.

Also check related parts such as drop-links, ARB bushes, wishbone bushes etc.
