My 1992 1.6 is getting quite rusty and I got a bit carried away during last week and ended up buying a 1993 1.8 Eunos too, in black and much nicer than my multi-coloured red 1.6.

On my 1.6 I have a custom induction pipe routed through the firewall into the base of the windscreen, I've done the 14 degree timing thing, it has an MX5 parts twin pipe and foamectomied seats. It also has a fully working LSD and new dampers and springs all round.

I'd quite like to transfer all of this stuff over to the 1.8 - beyond the size difference of the engine and some diffs in the inlet / exhaust etc.. are they identical in terms of everything else? Can I do a straight swap of the following:

1. seats, steering wheel and gearknob
2. cat-back exhaust
3. silenced decat pipe and front downpipe.
4. dampers and springs
5. wheels
6. LSD
7. induction kit that replaces the inlet pipe up to the airflow meter on the 1.6
8. 14 degree timing mod or similar?

thanks
James

If the LSD is from a 1.6, you can't just swap it. You'd have to move over the 1.6 shafts as well. Are you sure the 1.8 Eunos doesn't already have a torsen? A lot of imports did.

I've no idea, I've not actually collected the car yet. Can I do the usual thing and jack it up and spin one rear wheel to determine whether it has one and it works, or do I need to do a few burnouts 1/2 on some gravel to tell?

The 1.6 LSD seems to work very well, for some reason it has always been filled with a bright purple thick opaque liquid, no idea what it is but seems to do the trick and I've had it for a few years.

Easiest way to try it is spin up the back wheels. Two marks it's a TorSen.

1. Yes.
2. I think so. Not 100% sure but I think they will be the same.
3. As 2.
4. Yes.
5. Yes.
6. As others have said, it probably already comes with LSD.
7. Yes but you will have to modify it to fit as the 1.6 AFM has a square outlet and the 1.8 MAF is round.
8. You'll have a hard job transferring it over wink but yes, you can do the same on 1.8.

excellent, thanks very much smile

Is it worth advancing the timing on a 1.8? It made the 1.6 feel very different to drive, much more muscular and less peaky, although not any faster overall I don't think.

Downpipe on the 1.8 is different to the 1.6. Decat pipe and everything behind that can be transferred to the 1.8.

Stick with the 1.8 diff - it is much larger and stronger.

Yes, it just doesn't make as much difference as on 1.6. It's a free mod though so good VFM.

Good, I will do that as it made the 1.6 much nicer to drive at anything below about 5000 rpm.

Can I decat a 1993 1.8 and still pass the MOT?

In theory, no. In practice, it's possible but still unlikely.

My understanding on de-catting a Eunos is that because its VIN will not appear on the DVLA records available to the Test Centre they can only carry out a limited emmissions test i.e makes no difference to them whether a cat is fitted or not.
Having said that I stand to be corrected.
Cheers, Pewe.

You could be right mate, I hadn't spotted that the OP had a JDM car.

frown never mind , I updated the HPI check before going to pay and collect the car and it showed up some irregularities with the V5, so I'm not buying that car after all.
