I haven't done mine, but have had the bumper off to detango my headlights (something that cleans up the look of the front-end!).
If you remove the bracket there are a series of fairly big holes cut into the bumper underneath - there are quite a few on MX5 Nutz that have removed the plinth and filled the holes for a smooth look, then used either a stick on, or a lower mounted plate, and they do look good.
I don't know if you might be able to get away with a stick-on over the holes - but it might look a bit ropey.

Agreed, they do look much better with the plinth removed, although the issue would be where to place the plate once done. (not many of the cars shown in the link has a number fitted, which is not a reasonable solution unless you like being pulled by the police and failing MOT's on a regular basis)
