Luggage Solutions...

Who's found a good one..? Have found that if the OH and I both pack a medium suitcase/rucksack there isn't room in the boot for stuff such as camping equipment; not that I'm complaining, the boot is waaaaaaaay bigger than I expected! :-)

Anyone seen/got this..? Seen it on ebay as an alternative to a luggage rack...

I managed 3 weeks camping around europe with the other half. we took two medium sized soft holdalls (smaller than suitcase but bigger than a rucksack).

You can ditch the spacesaver wheel and just use a can of tire weld. that frees up a lot of space, other than that just use a small tent and pack well. I would always find a luggage rack a bit of a security issue.

Just to give you an idea- we managed to fit the following in the boot:

3 man tent (compact)
2 x sleeping bags (compact)
2 x inflatable roll mats (rolled together to save space)
1 hibachi bbq
2 x medium sized holdalls
1 x small tool kit and mx5 workshop guide
plates cutlery wine glassed and various other bits and bobs
2 coats and a rug
All the crud you need for travelling through europe: triangle, reflective jackets, bulbs, fire extinguisher.
4 pairs of shoes.

Was a bit of a squeeze in there but it all fit and packing got easy after a while. dont forget if it all gets too much you can always use the rear parcel shelf.

I've got them already and frankly wish I hadn't bothered! My large daysack and the OH's small suitcase are much more space efficient!

Interested in experiences with the boot-bag though...capacity, kindness to paintwork, security and ease of use?

Just got back from an excellent 2 weeks camping/touring in the Dordogne and Pyrenees, no fitted luggage to be able to better fill every crevice within the boot, Mx5 Parts boot rack and a bag for the tent and chairs, and one of these - http://www.geris-bazaar.com/deck.html - works a dream whether the hood is up or down. Passenger seat a little forward to fit a few other bits in. Weather was good, so the hood down all the time, even had room for a few bottles of wine on the final leg...

Anyone used these on a car with the engine in the back like a Lambo or Ferrari Spyder? I assume the heat can have an effect?

I recall seeing a Fiat 850 Spyder with a luggage rack on fire on the Simplon back in the 60's, from the window of the family Humber Hawk. So probably not a good idea.
