Am I missing a trick here, my mk2 sport is an absolute pain to fill up, it clicks constantly unless it is absolutely trickling in? I've tried holding it slightly out of the filler, but it absolutely p!ssed out everywhere at Ed Tankselles just off the Dottinger Hohe straight... I was too busy looking at the painfully slow rate the numbers were going and didnt realise...

Any ideas/tips? smile

This happens with mine if I'm too hasty.

Take the cap off, wait ten seconds, go for the pump, wait for authorisation and then fill up.

If you're too quick it can click a lot, I assume the fuel sensor or whatever it is needs the petrol fumes to escape before filling up.

I've had the same problem and aksed the same question a few weeks ago. There's some good suggestions on the thread. I found having the hose over the rear light, ie pump facing north/south worked.

Rather embarrissingly, I replied to that thread and forgot about it! smile

I also need to calculate the latest fuel economy... I was told its 8 laps to a tank round the Nurburgring though... eek I am sure mine did slightly better than that?!

My dad's early Mk.2 is the same - apparently there's a revised fuel filler neck or something but my dad's local Mazda dealer were so utterly ste that they managed not to do it even when he specifically asked them to do it.

I use the right hand side pump and lean the hose across the boot, as this makes the nozzle enter at the opposite angle. This should sort the problem.

Mazda UK might not like us to see their Service Bulletins but the US ones are available on Miata.net including:

1999 Miata hard to fuel

Does that mean Mazda recognise the problem as a design flaw? In which case could I walk into my local Mazda garage and ask them carry out the repair on my 11 year old car free of charge, upon production of said document? Wishful thinking I guess.

That's a service bulletin, not a recall notice. There might have been a recall at the time but it would have expired long ago. It does mean they should recognise the problem and should be able to fix it quickly.

Nae problem Kev. I'd guess a non return valve from a later Mk2 would probably fix it.

Interesting... does anyone know the costs of said repair/upgrade? I'd be verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry tempted. Its just about the only thing I can fault the car on!

Give MX5Heaven or Autolink a call and let us know how you get on. It'll be interesting to hear of someone fixing it themselves smile

Will give this a try, but will also look for the aformentioned valve and assess how easily I could swap it with a new one/ get a price on that. smile
