For those that track it - Sloppy drivetrain

for those that track their cars, well, everyone really just guessing the tracked ones get driven harder :-p

my car is an ex track toy, and i've been trying to 'track' down (sorry) rattling from the back on overrun, banging and tramping on standing starts when there's a bit of wheelspin and a generally sloppy feel between throttle input and 'go'

my first thought, if the engine and diff mounts weren't knackered were that it had to be a really worn ring and pinion in the diff, however someone on the technical section and a mazda garage think thats unlikely - chap in technical thinks more worn cv's, mazda didn't offer any ideas

i'm off to the mazda garage in a bit with the car to have a look with them and see what they say. i know i could/should just upgrade to 1.8 stuff but i don't really have the finances until summer to do that. i was advised by opie oils to try a different diff oil but until i'm sure the diff isn't the cause i don't want to do a third oil change only to have to have the diff adjusted!

You can get uprated engine mounts and poly inserts for the diff mount. Certain exhausts will bang on the rear frame / braces if the engine moves about too much.

are 1.8 + 1.6 diff mount rubbers the same? if so i'd get some just to rule that out

i have some chain to stop excessive exhaust movement as it was contacting the rear bumper, the banging on acceleration is violent enough that the gearbox + shifter moves around a bit, so i'm fairly sure it's drivetrain related

mx5parts are slightly cheaper for standard ones, but only by £10

think i'm gonna have to get the old ones off and properly inspect before i spend that much on 2 bits of rubber
