I'm back with my daughter's Mk2.

The rear wheel bearing is fixed and sound.
She now has a light flapping sound from the rear which is quite audible at less than 10 mph with brakes on or off and the sound is exactly in time with wheel rotation

Assuming nothing is stuck under there (the noise arrived suddenly not gradually)is there any experience of a cause you can give me?

I can get the car into the garage for a jack-up and a good look on sunday, not before.

Surely it must be something trapped (ie piece of carboard)?

This is not a brake pad scraping, it is a bit like when you were young and had a piece of card 'flapper' on your bike wheel to make a noise as you rode along, the faster the better!

Brake disc heatsheild thingy flapping?

I'd get underneath and also check its not something dangling/flapping on the propshaft/driveshafts.

I can get my hands on this car tomorrow when daughter is here, but she now tells me it is happening at 40 mph, the frequency of the ;knonk' is commensurate with wheel speed.

The car was recently fixed for a duff rear wheel bearing under warrentee, I wonder if the drive shaft nut is tight enough/ loosened through the hub?

The noise happened instantly, so I doubt the nut loosened instantly.

She is in Bristol now... so a gentle drive back!

Be interesting to see tomorrow afternoon.

Warrantee runs out in 2 weeks so that's good news!

Can I suggest wheel nuts....possibly not tight....? Just a thought considering the wheels been off. Or the new part is duff.

I can safely say i found nothing to cause this noise.

Had the rear up and wheels off and went from gearbox/prop to the rear silencer, nothing.

Noted she needs brake padsand a set of discs to get things right, but apart from surface rust on everything, nothing. No twigs, plastic bags or stones in brake stone-guards.

Had the front up and wheels off, nothing at all.

Looks to me the garage replaced both rear wheel bearings, but everything tight.

Dropped the car down and washed the salt of the M5 off the car and my daughter went for a test drive.

Came back and said the noise had gone at all speeds!

Bet it's back tomorrow.....

She says it is still quiet!
I'll try the one-notch on the H/brake and see.

Brakes next.

£260 for a full set of Green Stuff pads and stock discs.

Noise is back with creaking under braking.....

Back to the garage under warrantee this friday.

I am worried about the back-lash of the diff input pinion shaft to the crownwheel. Seems excessive to me.

The noise was the rear brakes, OSR.

Had new rear discs and pads on under warrantee and they fixed a small oil leak from the rocker box gasket at the same time.
Had also new front discs/pads as they were looking sorry too for £120 all-in.

Driven the car myself today, about 80 miles and all is well.

Just need some sun so the hardtop can come off and get the roof down.

I expect now to have some trouble free months with this great little roadster.

After 6 weeks or so of silence, the noise has returned...

Out of warrantee now, so spanners out this week.

Car has all new discs and pads, so i can only think it is handbrake or caliper related now.

Any ideas before I rip it all apart?

Know zilch about MX5s but if you reported a fault within the warranty period and it's still there, why not take it back to the place you bought it from and demand that they fix it?

Could the hanbrake mechanism on the rear discs possibly be the reason??

I'm suspecting the NSR caliper. The new rear disc on that side shows only 2/3rds the polished brake pad area compared to the full polished brake pad area on the OSR disc.

I can feel a new pair of rear calipers coming on!

you can get a pair of new ones for £127 off ebay, or 170 off the MX5 owners club in this month's mag.
