Quote for sill repair - reasonable?
Discussion
Just been to the bodyshop with a view to getting my rust issues sorted out before the MOT is up in May. The car has had a very hard winter - over 15,000 miles in a car that previously only did 4k a year, through the s
ttiest Scottish weather and with a minor bump to the left-rear wheel arch along the way. The end result is that the (very) minor bubbling has turned into a couple of big perforations on each side and presumably spread to the inner sill section - the one with the two circular holes in.
Work to be done is:
- Grind and remove as much of rear arches as possible
- Cut away from box section and weld in new metal sections
- Weld on arch repair panels
- Patch up a couple of holes in the passenger side floorpan (note to self: pressing on through minor flooding is not good for carpets, metalwork, or wallet
)
- plus a good paint match - I've used the guy before, as has my dad, and it's always been spot on.
Quote is "in the region of" £500 for the arches - meaning he'll see how bad the inner sections really are once the outer panels are off and it'll go up/down from there.
Seems quite reasonable to me, having used the place before and knowing how good the blokes work is. Any thoughts? I'll be happy if after these repairs, I can get another year or so out of it before deciding if it's worth continuing with trying to keep the tinworm at bay.
If it helps, you can just about see the extent of the damage to the passenger side arch, and the colour of the rust that followed, below:

Cheers

My car went in last week to get a similar amount of work done. Im getting both sides fully resprayed + all 4 arches. My sill are fortunatly in pretty good nick. Quoted £800 which i am more than happy with as guys work is good and he knows his stuff.
Hopefully get it back at end of week so i can stick some Zymol on it.
Will be fully de-rusting the chassis and suspention components in the summer with rust bullet and dinitrol. Car should be ready for another 10+ years of running after work is all finished.
The work you are having done should last more than 1 year. I got a pretty cheap bit of re spraying done on an merc i used to have and it was just as good 3 years later when i sold the car.

Sounds like a reasonable price for the amount of work required, especially if it's a decent job.
Can I ask where you're planning on getting the work done? I'm sure I recognise you as being based in Glasgow from the Scotland forum and I too have a green MX-5 that is probably going to need some sill and floorpan work done in the next year, I'm going to throw it through the MOT this month and see what the outcome is!

You might aswell get both sides dones.
The other side will be rotten inside.

. Classic Coachworks in Wishaw are doing the arches - the guys there sprayed and fitted a new door and front arch for me a couple of months back, and the match is perfect. yellowbentines said:

Down in Dumfries now, work being done by a local down here. Can I ask where you're planning on getting the work done? Cheers guys. Keep us posted on how the work goes Bonzo and what sort of rot is hidden away - I have a small amount of bubbling on one sill, however from what I've read this means the inside could be rotten as hell!
If Classic Coachworks do a good job I'll probably use them myself, post up some 'after' photos!

Its quite easy to get a good look inside the sills/rear arches.Open your door, remove the stainless steel sill panel.
Pull off the rubber trim that runs along the length of the seatbelt tower trim panel. Undo the fixings through this trim part - you can lever it out and get it pulled back without undoing the seatbelt itself, or any rollbars, roll hoops. Under here you'll see a couple of flaps of clear plastic stuck down with mastic, you can peel these back a little.
Now stick your head in the rear arch and carefully lever out the rubber bung that is fitted through a hole in the inside arch panel (looking toward the front of the car).
Now if you stick a torch through you can get a really good look around inside to inspect. The sills are where the water drains through so if you find water sloshing about thats a sign you need to clear your drain holes out from underneath.
